Kerbs

Straight and curved granite kerbs from Nordic Outdoor Stone’s Oulainen factory. Standard profiles and products manufactured to project drawings.

Kerb types

Nordic Outdoor Stone manufactures straight and curved granite kerbs at its Oulainen factory for streets, footways, courtyards and other outdoor spaces. The range includes R, V and LR profiles and bespoke components made to drawings.

Street kerbs use established profiles and dimensions. We also manufacture kerbs with bespoke cross-sections. The following guide covers common product series; project drawings, dimensions and tolerances are confirmed when ordering.

Model codes and dimensions

The number in a model code denotes the stone’s thickness, or width, in centimetres. For example, 17 means a width of 170 mm. Dimensions below are given as width × total height × length. Total unit height differs from the exposed kerb height after installation.

A common product series has a nominal height of 270 mm and a height-class range of 250–290 mm. A typical manufacturing height is 260 mm. Units within the same order follow one agreed height class. Straight kerbs are generally supplied in random lengths of 900–2500 mm.

R15 · R17 · R20 · R22 · R30

Straight kerbs · R type

R17: 170 × 260 × 900–2500 mm

The R type is a straight basic kerb for defining paved areas. Its designation comes from the older Finnish term raakareunakivi and remains in use for sawn and surface-finished products.

The straight profile is also referred to as S type. Equivalence between R and S designations is checked against the section drawing. The R17 example is 170 mm wide, 260 mm high and 900–2500 mm long.

V17 · V22 · V30

Chamfered kerbs · V type

V17: 170 × 260 × 900–2500 mm

The V type has a 20 × 100 mm chamfer on its front face. It suits streets and trafficked areas where a less abrupt contact surface than a vertical face is required.

The chamfer can reduce direct contact between a vehicle wheel rim and the upper kerb edge. It also affects the contact point for snow-clearing equipment; stability depends on correct installation and support. The V17 example has the same overall dimensions as R17.

LR17 · LR22 · LR30

Sloping kerbs · LR type

LR17: 170 × 260 × 900–2500 mm

A sloping, or mountable, kerb provides a gentler transition over the edge. The LR profile has a 40 × 150 mm top chamfer to facilitate crossing.

Typical applications include driveway accesses, pedestrian crossing arrangements and mountable outer rings at roundabouts. Exposed height and connections to adjacent surfaces follow the project’s traffic and accessibility design.

Curved kerbs

Curved kerbs are manufactured to the specified radius, measured at the exposed front face. Drawings identify the curve direction: inner-curve units have a convex front, while outer-curve units have a concave front.

Common product-series practice uses curved units for radii up to 12 m. Unit length is 780 mm below a 2 m radius and 1000 mm from 2 m upwards. For radii above 12 m and up to 14 m, short straight units of 900–1200 mm may be used. Unit layout and joints are always coordinated with the project drawings.

Kerb installation and support

Earth-moist concrete is commonly used for bedding and support. The kerb is initially positioned on concrete setting pads in the trench and adjusted to the specified line and level. Bedding and lateral support are then completed to provide firm support along the entire unit.

A kerb left on isolated support points can be damaged by loading or vehicle crossing. Continuous support and a well-compacted construction are essential for a durable installation.

Kerbs may also be laid on designed crushed-aggregate bedding. The base and surrounding support material must be thoroughly compacted. Aggregate provides less rigid support than concrete, which needs to be considered in the design.

For structural concrete installation, units can first be aligned on temporary supports, such as timber blocks, before concrete is placed around them. This produces a rigid construction, but removing strongly bonded concrete complicates subsequent alterations and reuse. Installation details and technical requirements follow the project design and applicable InfraRYL requirements.

Long service life and reuse

Natural stone kerbs offer a long service life and the opportunity to reuse the same material. Granite units in good condition can be lifted, cleaned and installed elsewhere when streets or courtyards are redesigned.

Reuse reduces the need for new material and retains the value of manufactured stone. Condition, dimensions and suitability for the new application are checked before reinstallation. Careful removal, cleaning and storage support long-term use.

Talk to us during design

Nordic Outdoor Stone helps select kerbs and plan their manufacture. Our Oulainen factory can produce both standard profiles and components made to project drawings. We assist with profiles, dimensions, surface finishes and curved units, as well as suitable models and practical manufacturing solutions.

Send your drawings or specify the application, stone type, cross-section, radius and curve direction, quantities and delivery schedule. We can then coordinate manufacturing and delivery batches with your project’s needs.
